Brigit, meaning "Exhaulted One" embodies the Celtic wisdom of the natural world and is celebrated each year on February 1st with the arrival of Imbolc or spring.

The weekend celebration at the Garden will weave together Brigit ritual, tradition, cross-making, creativity, and sharing to create a special Imbolc celebration that welcomes spring and the coming of Brigit.

We intend the weekend to be inclusive, nourishing, authentic and fun, with time to relax and enjoy the special environment of Brigit's Garden.

Take some time to learn more about Brigit and her customs by reading our information here.

Thursday January 31st - Brigit's Eve - 7.30pm

Brigit's Cross

Celebrate Brigit's Eve, Oíche Bhríde, in the Roundhouse with an evening of Brigit traditions, cross-making, music, ritual and reflection.

Brigit's Crosses were traditionally made on Brigit's Eve. Brigit's cross is either a three-legged or four-legged cross which has been identified as having its roots as an ancient solar symbol pre-dating Christianity.

The evening will be led by Moya Roddy at 7.30pm and there will be refreshments afterwards included in the ticket price of €15.00.

Friday 1st February - Brigit's Day

Brigit encompasses both the Christian Saint and the Celtic goddess. Her feast day on 1st February, or Imbolc, marks the start of spring and is deeply connected with nature and the renewal of life.

The Iris Aniar show on Raidio Na Gaeltachta will be broadcasting live from Brigit's Garden from 9.15am - 10.15am on this special day and you can listen to the show via this link.

The Garden Café will  be open too serving teas and coffees and sweet homemade treats. Normal off-peak garden admission applies.

May Brigit spread her cloak of protection over you and yours this day of Imbolc.

Saturday 2nd February - Brigit's Cross Making Workshop - 3pm

Celebrate the start of spring with a family-friendly Brigit’s Cross making workshop! Rushes will be provided and you will be able to make your own traditional cross to take home. Learn all about Brigit and her relevance to the modern day and hear the story of Brigit's Cloak too.

Children can also explore the Discovery Trail around the gardens, and the Garden Café will be open too. Tickets are €15.00 per adult, €5.00 per child and under 7's are free.
